Hi everyone. My name is Rick Farren and I have written several books published by Summerland Publishing (formerly Journey Publications). I’d like to share a bit about myself and my books and welcome your feedback and questions.

After working in the financial services industry for more than 40 years, I retired in 2001. Today I find the enjoyment of seeing my novels and children’s books come to fruition. I initially wrote “Grandpa and the Pirate” in 2001 as an extra holiday gift for my grandchildren, and was subsequently encouraged by my wife and family to publish it.

My first children’s book, “Grandpa and the Pirate” was published in December 2003. It’s an engaging story for young adventure seeking readers. During a storm, Dickey Denton and his grandfather are forced to beach their small disabled fishing boat on a deserted island. It’s here where Dickey learns valuable lessons about life and survival. The story combines imagination and courage while reinforcing family values and skills development.

My second book, “The Secret of the Lighthouse,” was published in August 2004. It is the sequel to “Grandpa and the Pirate.” Old journals, dating back to the 19th century, that were kept by a brave and mysterious woman, and an unexplained light in the window of Rocky Neck Lighthouse lead Dickey and his best friend on a frightening adventure. The book includes friendship, mystery and suspense. It’s magical and dramatic ending is sure to entertain and surprise young readers.

My third book in the Dickey Denton series, “Eliza’s Wish,” was published in September 2005. It’s a captivating and uplifting tale that will instantly charm both children and adults. My most recent book is "Promises Kept," the story of Garrett Burns, a young homeless man caught in the unrelenting grip of his addiction. The story profiles his struggle and sacrifices attempting to overcome his demons.
Garrett’s life had spiraled out of control since becoming estranged with his father and leaving home during his teenage years causing him to bounce from back alleys, to rooming houses and shelters.
Although set in the 1970’s it is a contemporary story portraying the troubles of our society while demonstrating the resilience and resourcefulness of the individual soul.
Inspired by an unlikely minister, the prospects of a steady paycheck, and an introspective young woman, Garrett perseveres to find himself and conquer his demons while at the same time attempting to mend his family relationships. Eventually, through a near tragic event he discovers the meaning of a salvaged soul.
